The Instituto Argentino de Siderurgia invites you to the 24th IAS Steel Conference which will include topics ranging from raw materials to end-products, including sessions on Safety and Environment and with a special emphasis on "Steel Industry 4.0", one of the greatest interests for the steel community.

The Conference will be enhanced with the EXPO IAS 2022 to the Steel Industry at which companies will have the opportunity to share their latest developments and products. The Exhibit area will be a key point of the Conference. The exhibition will run throughout the event.

The Conference will be held from Tuesday, 25th to Thursday 27th October 2022 in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina.

Pre-conference courses will take place on Monday, 24th October and will be delivered by internationally renowned speakers who will deal with different aspects of the steelmaking process; and the traditional plant tours will take place on Friday 28th October.

STEEL INDUSTRY DECARBONIZATION
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

An Impartial View of Steel Industry Decarbonization.

ABSTRACT
With the Paris Accord comes the demand for the steel industry to reduce CO2/Green House Gas (GHG) emissions to 0.2Tonne/Tonne steel (0.2Te CO2/Testeel) by 2070. The pressure on Steelmills is incomprehensible since they only contribute 7% of GHG emissions using 8% of the total energy worldwide for an average world emission level of 1.8Te CO2/Testeel (2015). The issue of course is our historical image - one of a very dirty industry - and 70% of the GHG currently is sourced from carbon use – ore reduction, combustion or alloying.
Technically, decarbonization is not the correct phraseology since steel is predominantly an alloy of iron and carbon. Perhaps defossilization is a more apt terminology (coined from the decarbonization session at AISTech 2022).
This course will look at the international steel industry’s decarbonization/defossilization efforts and the challenges thereto.

Dr. Sara Hornby
Global Strategic Solutions, Inc., USA

Sara received her BSc(Hons) Metallurgy and her British Steel Corporation (BSC) sponsored PhD in Industrial Metallurgy at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. Her UK cupola foundry, R&D, and Steelmill (Firth Brown Tools and BSC) experience provided a good basis for her N. America career which began with >17 years with air Liquide. This was followed by technology company management positions (Tenova Goodfellow, Midrex Technologies Inc., Linde Gases, Inteco PTI, TMS International) leading finally to her own consulting company, Global Strategic Solutions, Inc. Her involvement in applied R&D, new technology development and knowledge exchange, through networking with industry (especially operators), academia and students, OEMs and colleagues, has led to practice innovations and process optimization, especially for the steel industry. Sara holds 5 patents, has published over 127 papers, seminars and courses internationally and was the 2020 recipient of both the AIME AIST Benjamin F. Fairless Award and the AIST EF technical committee’s John Bell Award.

She is an AIME Oral History participant, an interviewee for the Women in Steel books and is the Institute of Metals, Mining and Material’s (IoM3’s) 2022 Hadfield Medal recipient. As an active member of AIST and ISS, Sara has participated in the BOD, University/Industry Relations, Ironmaking, EAF Steelmaking, DRI Committees and was Chairman of the Process Technology Division and the ISS BOD International Affairs Committee. Involvement in the latter led to IAS becoming an ISS (Now AIST) International Section.

Challenged to consider a metallurgy career, Sara prides herself in being a trail blazer.

REFRACTORY CASTABLE FOR
IRON AND STEEL TECHNOLOGY

ABSTRACT
It is more than obvious that refractory monolithic have distinct advantages in comparison to bricks. It is not too complex to order materials as refractory monolithic do not need a complex production route at the refractory producers’ site and reaction times from the point of order till delivery could be within some days.
They are easy to install and in consequence reduced down times increases the productivity. In further complex structures could be molded inside the thermal treatment device. It is not astonishing that refractory monolithic gained increasing market share since their first appearance in 1913. Today’s market share is about 45 % of all refractory materials.
However, refractory materials, even if they are developed carefully by the refractory producer, always contain a certain amount of risk, as the installation is not as easy as it looks like.
It is inevitable that the engineer who is responsible for relining has a comprehensive understanding how refractory monolithic perform in terms of preparation, installation and first heating. Severe mistakes could already be made during the mixing process, where the mixing energy input, the amount of mixing water and the water quality could already strongly impact the lining performance. An improper preparation causes improper workability and will lead to an insufficient densification. In consequence the lining suffers of reduced service life and the risk of an emergency shutdown is increasing.
Therefore, this course will give detailed insights in the nature of refractory materials and will point out specific material properties that must be well known to avoid mistakes during installation.

Prof. Dr. Olaf Krause
Koblenz University of Applied Science, Germany

Prof. Dr. Olaf Krause studied mineralogy at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University in Bonn from 1987-1997and graduated as doctor of natural science in Bonn and at Max Planck Institute of geochemistry in Mainz. From 1997 – 1999 he worked as application scientist and as quality manager at CRB GmbH in Hardegsen, thereafter from 1999 – 2001 as research fellow at Werkstoffzentrum Rheinbach GmbH. Between 2001 and 2009 he works as scientist in the Forschungsgemenischaft Feuerfest e. V. Since 2009 Olaf Krause is Professor at Koblenz University of Applied Science and is responsible for education in refractory materials and mineralogy. In the last decade Prof. Krause performed with various project partners 25 industry related research projects where he focuses on the material properties of refractory monolithics. METALLURGY OF LONG PRODUCTS FOR
HIGH STRENGTH APPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT
This course covers many of the key metallurgical aspects for manufacturing low alloy steels as long products for high performance applications. It begins with understanding the importance of austenite grain size and how casting, thermomechanical processing, and heat treatment affect prior austenite grain size. The important effects of sulfur are discussed with respect to castability, cast structure, sulfide inclusions in bars, and fatigue performance. The effects of boron and titanium additions on hardenability and impact toughness are described along with supporting research data. The carburizing process and requirements of hardenability and austenite grain size control for both gas carburizing and vacuum carburizing are discussed with reference to alloy content.

Prof. Robert Cryderman
Colorado School of Mines, USA

Robert (Bob) Cryderman is a Research Associate Professor at the Colorado School of Mines. He received BSE (1968) and MSE (1970) degrees from the University of Michigan. He has published over 40 technical papers, has been awarded 9 patents, wrote the introductory chapter for the AIST 2017 edition of Making, Shaping, and Treating of Steel – Long Products and was recently elected as a Fellow by ASM International. Bob has over 45 years of experience in the steel producing industry where he has been instrumental in developing and applying metallurgical principles to produce new and improved products. He worked as a researcher and manager of metallurgy and quality at Climax Molybdenum Company, J&L Steel Company, CF&I Steel, North Star Steel, MacSteel, and Gerdau Special Steel in the areas of plate steels, seamless tubes, railroad rails, and special quality bars for automotive and heavy truck applications. Bob joined the Advanced Steel Processing and Products Development Center at Colorado School of Mines in 2013. Bob taught classes on bar steel manufacturing from raw materials to final heat treatment that covers metallurgical requirements for a variety of automotive and heavy equipment applications. His current area of interest and research is on the effects of microstructure and grain boundary segregation on the performance of components manufactured from bar steels that perform at high hardness levels (>55 HRC) in highly stressed applications.
